A very special thank-you to all who participated in the My Dinner with Lydia Davis contest. We received six excellent submissions ( a respectable number, I believe, for a first contest). The blog pulled in 259 hits during the five days the contest was running -- which means 253 people are chicken-shits. Buck buck buck.
Your Lydia stories were fierce and funny. Donna D Vittuci paired Lydia with the inimitable Bette Davis for maximum sparkitude. Frank O'Connor wrote through his unfamiliarity w/ Davis in an inspired metafiction. Ethel Rohan cast Lydia as a boozing socialite with wine-stained teeth, paying the narrator's manservant for a striptease. Stefanie Freele captured Davis's tight language, intellectualism and absurdity through a narrator who forgot to invite Lydia, then repeatedly forgot she'd forgotten.
The runner-up and winner's stories (neither mentioned above) will be posted as separate blog entries, and the winner will receive a one-year subscription to the lit journal of their choice.
In the meantime, I'd like to direct you toward some favorite pieces of mine by the above entrants, each of whom easily qualify as honorable mentions
Breathing Oysters by Stefanie Freele
The Man who Filled his Guinea Pig w/ Helium by Frank O'Connor
The Top of the Mountain and Absent by Ethel Rohan
The Tree that Girdles Itself by Donna D. Vitucci
Thanks again to all who entered! ...stay tuned during the coming weeks for in-depth coverage of the lit journal chosen by our winner!
